You’re Something Else

by Gene Kruckemyer

The chance is pretty good that You’re Something Else—at least your first name might be.

Such as: A female wolverine is an Angeline, a recently married man who had been a committed bachelor is a Benedict, and Jess is a thin strap used in falconry to tether a bird on a training glove.

These and more than 1,000 other first names that mean something else have been collected for this fun, informative and sometimes surprising resource. Whatever your name, this book is for you to learn about yourself and others.

Geneonym of the Week

Victoria – a low four-wheeled carriage for two with a folding top and a raised seat in front for the driver

The names in this book comprise a new category of words I’ve been calling geneonyms, beginning with the prefix gene–, which means born or produced (as in genesis, generate, genealogy), and the suffix -nym, meaning name.
